In the event of an emergency the
nearest hospital is based in the town of Salvacion,
11km away. CREES can contact
the hospital via radio to arrange a 4x4 ambulance
vehicle to meet at a designated pickup point on
the opposite side of the river from the MLC. The
boat ride to the pickup point takes 5 minutes in
the dry season and 15-20 minutes in the rainy season.
(Please note that in the rainy season the evacuation
procedure is the same, although a different fluvial
pickup point is used.)
CREES maintains a small boat
which can be used in the event of an emergency.
Back-up fluvial transport can also be summoned from
Atalaya by radio.
The hospital in Salvacion will assess
injuries and sickness and if required, casualties
may be driven to Cusco for further treatement.
In a worst-case scenario, a
helicopter can pick up casualties from Salvacion
and airlift them to either Cusco or Lima. Response
times for this service vary due to a limited number
of helicopters covering a large area.
