Medical Facilities

CREES maintains a minimum of one first aid qualified member of staff at the MLC at all times who can treat minor injuries. The MLC maintains a medical kit and an injury/sickness book in which all incidents are recorded.

The Manu Learning Centre is 11km from the local hospital in Salvacion which provides emergency care (see emergency procedures), normal general health care and a small pharmacy with prescription based medicines. Access to these facilities requires a boat to cross the river, which is provided by the MLC.

Insurance Requirements

All visitors to the Manu Learning Centre are required to have full insurance coverage for the duration of their stay at the MLC that must include a minimum medical evacuation coverage of $50,000 (US).

CREES can obtain insurance cover for visitors through an accredited 3rd party insurer but requires a minimum of one weeks notice.

Proof of insurance must be supplied upon registration at the CREES office in Cusco. Visitors who are unable to provide proof of insurance will not be allowed to travel to the MLC and will risk forfeiting any monies paid.

Emergency Procedures

In the event of an emergency the nearest hospital is based in the town of Salvacion, 11km away. CREES can contact the hospital via radio to arrange a 4x4 ambulance vehicle to meet at a designated pickup point on the opposite side of the river from the MLC. The boat ride to the pickup point takes 5 minutes in the dry season and 15-20 minutes in the rainy season. (Please note that in the rainy season the evacuation procedure is the same, although a different fluvial pickup point is used.)

CREES maintains a small boat which can be used in the event of an emergency. Back-up fluvial transport can also be summoned from Atalaya by radio.

The hospital in Salvacion will assess injuries and sickness and if required, casualties may be driven to Cusco for further treatement.

In a worst-case scenario, a helicopter can pick up casualties from Salvacion and airlift them to either Cusco or Lima. Response times for this service vary due to a limited number of helicopters covering a large area.
