OFFICIAL OPENING OF THE MANU LEARNING CENTRE
CREES was delighted to officially open the
Manu Learning Centre (MLC) on July 5th 2005 and accommodate
a variety of research teams in the second half of the year.
CREES is also happy to announce that David
Segudaro has accepted a permanent position as manager of the
MLC and that Claudia Torres has been appointed as CREES' Scientific
Coordinator to oversee research and project development.
For more information on the MLC facility and
the biodiversity of the 600 hectare private reserve where
it resides, please visit the following page on the CREES website:

MANU ETHNOBOTANY, CULTURAL ECOLOGY AND CONSERVATION PROGRAMME
- AUGUST 2006
CREES is currently working with Professors
Glenn Shepard and Douglas Yu in the design and promotion a
35 day Ethnobotany Programme starting on 1st August 2006.
Young scientists are invited to live, work & train with indigenous
people in the world famous Manu Biosphere Reserve of the Peruvian
Amazon. The programme includes 10 days intensive training
at the Manu Learning Centre & 20 days research at the Casa
Matsiguenka indigenous lodge in Manu National Park.
For more information please visit the following
webpage:

TRAINING PROGRAMMES: FAUNA FOREVER MANU 2005
CREES offers visiting students and professors
the opportunity to learn field research and data analysis
skills in an environment where they can apply these skills
to projects in progress. The Fauna Forever Manu 2005 training
and wildlife monitoring programme represented a significant
step for CREES in the development of this concept.
Led by Chris Kirkby, the 70-day programme took
participants on a unique journey through three ecosystems
and included modules covering tropical ecology, ecosystem
differentiation, taxonomy, environmental impact studies and
conservation appraisal. Much of this research has laid the
foundations of information for the Projects lined up for 2006.
If you would like to know more about training
that CREES can provide please visit:

or email info@crees-manu.org

EDUCATION & COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: THE ECOLOGY CLUB
Inspired by Project Peru, a group of scientists
from Aberdeen University studying soil sustainability at the
MLC, the CREES Ecology Club continues to hold weekly classes
on conservation and sustainability for children from the local
village of Salvacion. This education initiative seeks to tackle
a root cause of environmental degradation in the area, which
is a simple lack of knowledge. By empowering local children
with information, CREES hopes to promote awareness and allow
future generations to be open-minded about using sustainable
solutions to solve local problems.
To find out more about the Ecology Club, please
visit the following page on the CREES website:
http://www.crees-manu.org/proj_ecologyclub.shtml
Many thanks to Matthew Fielding and the Project
Peru team and those who have donated to the Ecology Club fund;
in particular Ric van Vugt. If you are interested in making
a donation that will allow CREES to expand this initiative
to include other villages in the area, please email info@crees-manu.org.
--------------------------------------------
RESEARCH INITIATIVES: TEAM
CREES is now applying monitoring techniques
in areas threatened by or previously impacted by human populations
using TEAM protocols. (TEAM - Tropical Ecology, Assessment
and Monitoring Initiative - part of Conservation International).
The MLC's location in the 'buffer' zone between local populations
and the Manu National Park makes it ideal for this kind of
impact assessment.
If you or your research team are interested
in participating in this impact assessment, please send an
email to info@crees-manu.org
--------------------------------------------
FENEMAD CONSULTANCY
CREES conducted an investigation into the biological
and tourist potential of the Amarakaeri Communal Indigenous
Reserve for the Federation for Indigenous Peoples in Madre
de Dios (FENEMAD) and the United Nations Development Program.
Already exciting potential has been demonstrated and CREES
and FENEMAD are discussing the possible development of a management
plan for the Reserve. Expect updates on the FENEMAD Consultancy
later in the year.
